Here's what you should know about jet fuel exposure, the conditions it has been linked to, and what an Air Force Veteran needs to prove a claim. 

What Jet Fuels Did Air Force Personnel Work Around? 

The Air Force has used several kerosene-based fuels over the years, and each one carried its own mix of hazardous chemicals. JP-4 was the primary fuel through the early 1990s and was especially volatile, producing heavy vapor exposure for anyone nearby. Between 1992 and 1996, the Air Force largely transitioned to JP-8, a less volatile but still hazardous fuel that remains widely used today. JP-5, a similar kerosene-based fuel used mainly by the Navy, also shows up in some joint-service and shared-airfield assignments.

All three fuels are complex mixtures of more than 200 aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and naphthalene. Fuel cell maintainers, who physically entered aircraft fuel tanks to inspect and repair them, often had the highest exposure levels, but flight line crews, refuelers, and even administrative personnel stationed near flight operations absorbed these chemicals through inhalation and skin contact. 

What Health Conditions Have Been Linked to Jet Fuel and Benzene Exposure? 

Because jet fuel is a chemical mixture rather than a single substance, its health effects show up across several body systems. Veterans filing a claim typically need to identify a specific, currently diagnosed condition rather than "jet fuel exposure" as a standalone disability. 

Cancers and Blood Disorders 

Benzene is a well-documented human carcinogen, and long-term exposure has been associated with leukemia and other blood cancers. Veterans researching benzene-linked disease may recognize some of the same conditions discussed in claims involving contaminated water exposure at Camp Lejeune, since benzene is one of the shared chemicals in both exposure scenarios. 

Neurological and Balance Problems 

Studies of Air Force fuel cell workers and flight line personnel have documented dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and vestibular dysfunction, sometimes described as chronic imbalance, following repeated jet fuel exposure. Some research also points to changes in reaction time and neuropsychological test performance among Veterans with cumulative exposure. 

Heart and Respiratory Effects 

Long-term exposure to jet fuel components has also been connected to cardiovascular problems, including hypertension and coronary artery disease, along with respiratory irritation from repeated vapor inhalation. 

Does the PACT Act Cover Jet Fuel Exposure Claims? 

Many Veterans assume that because the PACT Act expanded coverage for toxic exposure claims tied to burn pits and Agent Orange, jet fuel exposure must be covered the same way. It usually is not. PACT Act presumptions apply to Veterans who served in specific locations during specific time periods and later developed a condition on the VA's presumptive list, most of which trace back to burn pits and airborne hazards rather than fuel handling on a domestic flight line. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, a presumptive condition means the VA assumes military service caused the disability once a Veteran meets the service and diagnosis requirements, without needing separate proof of causation. Jet fuel exposure claims that fall outside that presumptive framework require the Veteran to independently establish the connection between service and their current condition. 

How Do You Prove a Direct Service Connection for Jet Fuel Exposure? 

A direct-connection claim generally needs three things: a current diagnosis, evidence of an in-service exposure event or duty, and a medical opinion connecting the two. For jet fuel cases, that evidence often includes: 

  • Military occupational specialty codes showing fuel-related duties, such as aerospace propulsion, fuel systems maintenance, or flight line crew assignments 

  • Duty station records confirming time spent near active flight operations or fuel cell maintenance bays 

  • Buddy statements from fellow service members describing the working conditions, protective equipment (or the lack of it), and how often exposure occurred 

  • A nexus letter, written by a qualified medical provider, explaining why the Veteran's current condition is at least as likely as not connected to jet fuel exposure during service 

Veterans whose jet fuel-related conditions leave them unable to keep steady work should also look into unemployability claims for Veterans, since combined disabilities from multiple body systems can sometimes qualify for compensation at the 100 percent rate even when no single condition reaches that level on its own. 

What Should You Do if You Believe Jet Fuel Exposure Affected Your Health? 

Start by gathering your service records, especially anything that shows your military occupational specialty, duty stations, and time spent near the flight line or fuel cell operations. Ask your doctor to document your diagnosis clearly, and hold onto any earlier medical records that show when your symptoms began. Because direct-connection claims depend heavily on medical evidence rather than a location-and-date presumption, the strength of your nexus evidence often determines whether your claim succeeds on the first attempt or ends up in a lengthy appeal.
