The VA is planning to beef up their mental health staff once again.
VA Has Been Chronically Behind When it Comes to Providing Mental Health Services
While there have been many new hires over the years, the VA always seems to be behind in keeping up with sufficient mental health doctors, nurses, social workers and other para professionals. The number of service-connected mental health injuries, both for new returning soldiers and for veterans of past conflicts and service, is on the rise, and the VA is struggling to provide medical services to these veterans.
VA Will Hire 1,900 Health Care Workers, Potentially Reducing Wait Times
The press release from VA indicates that 1,900 health care workers will be hired. Many VA facilities, such as Chicago, Colorado Springs, and Sacremento, have waits of over six months for an initial appointment with a mental health counselor.
